challenge

Urban legend states that Teddie Film's first video originated with a Ke$ha music video contest, in which the public was encouraged to create their own version of Ke$sha's "Tik Tok" music video. The winner of the contest was promised a dumpster-diving, thrift-store shopping date with Ke$sha herself.

APPROACH

Teddie Films took that challenge on by mashing "Tik Tok" with "Star Wars" and a host of other geeky easter eggs and references. The video went viral. But a contest winner was never announced. Despite that, Teddie Films had struck a nerve with the YouTube community, landing on a format that combined the best of pop music with fervor of geek and media culture.

CREATIVE DEVELOPMENT

The Teddie Films, music video / pop culture mashups proved to be a winning formula.

Gotye + Star Wars, Taylor Swift + Breaking Bad, and will.i.am & Britney Spears + Les Miserables are just some of the examples of viral success they had with these mashups.

Each video would follow the format of a music video, closely spoofing its shot selection, camera movement, and lighting. The song lyrics, actors, and environments were replaced to fit the lyrics. And the end result was nothing short of magical.

Results

The Teddie Films YouTube channel has amassed over 53M views and 100k subscribers—enough to earn them a Silver Play Button award.

In addition to the views and following, their work was shared by numerous publications and celebrities, including Aaron Paul, Russell Crowe, Alyssa Milano, Kevin Smith, Breaking Bad, Adweek, The Huffington Post, Mashable, The Atlantic, USA Today, and Forbes.

The music from these videos proved popular as well, with The Star Wars That I Used To Know peaking at #17 on iTunes comedy chart.
